Off-Season Storage and Care for All Sheepskin Products in 3 Easy Steps

Keep your sheepskin soft, snuggly, and ready for next season

Sheepskin is soft, warm, and oh-so-comfy. But when the weather warms up, it needs a little TLC to stay fresh. This guide is here to help you store your sheepskin goodies the right way—whether it's slippers, rugs, jackets, or baby boots. Let’s make sure everything stays fluffy, clean, and happy until you need it again.

Why Proper Storage is Important

Sheepskin is natural. It’s made from real wool and leather, so it needs care—just like your skin or hair. If you throw it in a cupboard and forget about it, you might come back to something flat, stiff, or even smelly. Storing your sheepskin items properly keeps them soft, smelling nice, and lasting longer.

Step 1: Clean Before You Store

Before you tuck your sheepskin away for its off-season nap, it deserves a little pampering. Think of it as giving it a goodbye hug before the long break. Give them a little clean. Dirt, sweat, and spills can get worse over time. Here’s what to do:

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth and gentle wool soap. No bleach!
  • Let it dry naturally, away from heaters or sun.
  • Brush the wool lightly to keep it fluffy.
  • Deodorise with Wool & Cashmere Spray.

Your sheepskin should be clean, dry, and fresh before it goes into storage.

Step 2: Pick the Right Storage Spot

Cool, dry, dark. That’s the magic trio. Pick a place that’s:

  • Not damp (no mould please!)
  • Not hot (heat makes leather crack)
  • Away from sunlight (it can fade and dry out sheepskin)

A cupboard or under-bed drawer works well. Just don’t use the attic or garage unless it’s climate-controlled.

Step 3: Use the Right Containers

Sheepskin likes to breathe. Plastic is its worst nightmare! Instead of trapping it in an airtight prison, let it relax.

  • Use a cotton bag, pillowcase, or box with holes.
  • No vacuum bags. They flatten the wool and trap moisture.
  • If you’re storing slippers or boots, pop in some tissue or shoe shapers to help them keep their shape.

Product-Specific Tips

Slippers & Shoes

  • Clean the insides with a cloth or soft brush.
  • Add cedar balls or bicarb sachets to stop smells.
  • Don’t squish them, use shoe shapers or stuff with tissue.

Rugs & Throws

  • Give them a good shake to release dust
  • Roll (don’t fold!) to avoid creases.
  • Wrap in cotton or breathable cloth.

Coats, Jackets & Hats

  • Hang on a wide, padded hanger.
  • Cover with a cotton garment bag.
  • Keep buttons done up so it keeps its shape.

Baby Sheepskin Products

  • Spot clean and dry fully.
  • Store in a breathable bag.
  • Keep away from pets, pests, and musty spots.

Keep Mould & Mites Away

Sheepskin doesn’t like damp. Here’s how to keep it safe:

  • Pop in silica packs or natural moisture absorbers.
  • Use cedar wood or lavender sachets to keep bugs away.
  • Check every few months if you’re storing for a long time.

What NOT to Do

  • Don’t store while damp or dirty.
  • No plastic bags or airtight tubs.
  • No sun, heaters, or radiators nearby.
  • No folding big rugs, roll them gently.

Waking Up Your Sheepskin After Storage

When the cooler days return and it’s time to bring your sheepskin out again, think of it as waking up an old friend from a long nap. Gently shake it to loosen any flattened fibres and let it stretch its ‘legs’ a bit.

Give it some fresh air for a few hours so it can breathe and lose any stale smells it might have. If you used our Wool & Cashmere Spray before storing your woollens they should still be scented with cedarwood with hints of orange.

Then, take a soft brush to the wool, coaxing back that lovely fluff we all love. If you notice a little dirt here or there, spot clean gently and allow it to dry naturally. And if the leather feels a touch stiff, a dab of leather balm, only on the leather bits will work wonders, leaving it soft and supple once again.

Cosy Care, All Year Long

Looking after your sheepskin pieces when they’re not in use is super simple and it makes a big difference. Whether it’s boots, rugs, or baby bits, just clean, store, and check now and then. When winter rolls back around, your sheepskin goodies will be as soft and cosy as ever.
