How To Decorate A Farmhouse Style Home
There’s just something special about a farmhouse, whether it’s an old-timey farmstead, a welcoming ranch style family home, or a contemporary modern twist on the classic farmhouse. These types of homes hark back to a time where we worked hard and enjoyed the little things in everyday life. The beauty of them lies in the simplicity of times gone by, similar to the cottagecore vibe that’s still super popular in our homes and wardrobes currently.
Designers such as Chip and Joanna Gaines have popularised this style in recent years, meaning we’re all looking for a way to make our homes that little bit more rustic without making huge overhauls. Whether your home is a new build or a historic home, getting that classic farmhouse feel is only a few steps away. We have a few tips on how to spruce up your living spaces this season to get that wholesome, pastoral vibe in your home.
Shiplap and Wooden Details
Roughly hewn wooden slats were once relegated to barns and sheds, but they’ve now become extremely popular in interior decor. We love how they bring a little of the outdoors in, but can be upgraded with a splash of white paint and colourful accents around the room. They can be used in small doses, such as a single accent wall, or to panel an entire space.
Sheepskin Accents
Of course, this is one of our absolute favourite tips! Our sheepskin and sheep’s wool is such a classic farmhouse material, being a natural fabric that comes as a byproduct of sheep reared for food. Not only does this gorgeous material bring comfort into your home in a way that generations have done for countless years, it also adds a natural outdoorsy element in a versatile way. The beauty of a sheepskin rug is that it can be moved from room to room depending on the space you’re currently using, and it can be used in many different ways – on cold stone floors in front of the hearth, to soften a sturdy bench, as a throw on your bed over the cooler months. The options are endless!
Sliding Barn Doors
Barn doors are an absolute mainstay of modern farmhouse decor. They’re more than a nod to traditional farm styles, but they can easily be modernised by polishing up the metal and giving them a pop of colour through paint. They’re also a fantastic use of space as they can be used in smaller rooms where there may not necessarily be as much room to swing open a traditional door. We’ve even seen them used in tiny homes and camper vans to divide spaces in a practical and fun way!
Create a Mudroom or Porch
The first thing you’d see in a traditional farmhouse would be the porch or mudroom where the workers would be able to remove their boots and overalls after a long day’s work to save them tracking mud through the rest of the home. While these may not be such a necessity in a townhouse that’s designed in farmhouse style, they certainly help to add to that vibe while also being a practical addition. Whether you use it to store muddy boots or to organise your kids’ school bags, a mudroom or porch can provide much needed storage space in your home to keep the rest of the living space free of clutter.
Details, Details, Details
The true styling is all in the details! Use a rustic ladder to hang spare blankets in the living room, hang basket weave art pieces on the walls, layer cosy textiles against one another on the sofas, use a eucalyptus runner on your table alongside earthenware crockery, place house plants on shelves and window sills. The best way is to do this though is to place functional items in useful places around the house – such as antique bowls on wooden cabinets, wooden chopping boards on your worktops and rattan baskets for storing table linens in the kitchen. These thoughtful kinds of details add to the classic farmhouse vibe without too much effort.
