How Does Sheep’s Wool Work?

You are here: Home Blog How Does Sheep’s Wool Work?

We often talk about the “magical” properties of sheepskin, but have you ever wondered what we mean by all this and how it works? Today we’re going to explain to you exactly why we think sheepskin and sheep’s wool is such a miracle product, why and how. Read on to find out more!

Sheep’s Wool is Insulating 🌡

The crimped nature of wool fibres means they form millions of tiny air pockets that trap air, helping to provide a thermal barrier. This means it keeps you warm when it’s cold out and cool when it’s warm.

This is why we love to use sheepskin in our products for babies who can’t regulate their temperatures as well as we can, as well as for pets who can easily overheat in the summer. Check out our Babycare and Pet Bed collections for more of these products!

Sheep’s Wool is Purifying 🌿

Sheep wool absorbs and neutralises harmful substances in the air, including Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide and Formaldehydes. This means that, unlike many other materials, sheep’s wool will prevent the growth of mould and bacteria. Again, this makes it an excellent product for babies!

Sheep’s Wool is Water Resistant 💧

The core of the sheep wool fibre is hydroscopic, meaning that it will absorb water vapour. It can absorb 33% of its weight in moisture without compromising its insulating ability. The lanolin in sheep’s wool also acts as a protective barrier against moisture to help it wick away easily.

Sheep’s Wool is Flame Resistant 🔥

Sheep wool is naturally flame resistant, one of only a few fibres able to do so. The high nitrogen content in wool means it will merely smoulder and singe instead of bursting into flame. This is one big reason why we prefer a real sheepskin rug near a fireplace or wood burning stove over a synthetic alternative which is more likely to be a fire risk!

Sheep’s Wool is Hypoallergenic 🤧

Due to its water resistant and purifying properties, sheep’s wool repels not only bacteria and mould, but also fungus and dust mites, which are a leading cause of allergies. The fibres themselves are also not irritating to skin, and since they don’t shed like synthetic products do, you’re a lot less likely to inhale tiny particles of material. This makes them perfect for those who suffer around other products.

Sheep’s Wool is Sustainable 🌍

Sheep wool is a 100% natural product, which uses less energy to produce compared to human-made wool equivalents. All of our sheepskin products come as a byproduct of the food industry, meaning that had we not utilised them for products for our home or to wear, as people have done for thousands of years, they would need to be otherwise destroyed.

You can see why we think sheepskin products are so magical! And lucky for you, our sheepskins are a super affordable option to try out miraculous sheep’s wool yourself! Take a look at our website to see what takes your fancy today.
