10 Tips for a Cool and Comfortable Night’s Sleep
While we all love these sunny summer days, summer nights can be a bit of a nightmare. Keeping our homes cool over the summer can end up as a battle between fans, open windows and kicked off sheets. But we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves to help you beat the heat and create a comfortable and cool sleep space.
Breathable Bedding
The foundation of a cool summer sleep experience starts with your bedding. Opt for natural, breathable materials like cotton, linen, and even sheepskin. Natural sheepskin has a unique ability to regulate temperature – it’s not just another piece of home decor! The fibres of sheepskin allow air to circulate, helping you stay cool in hot weather while also providing warmth when it’s cooler. A sheepskin rug underfoot or draped across your bed can work wonders in maintaining a comfortable sleeping temperature.
Keep Your Bedroom Cool
Maintaining a cool bedroom environment is essential for a peaceful summer night’s sleep. Use fans, air conditioning, or open windows to promote airflow. Consider blackout curtains to block out the sun’s heat during the day and invest in a quality mattress with breathable materials to prevent heat retention.
Ice Cold Comfort
This is a little hack we only recently learned to get that air conditioning feeling without the appliance! Before heading to bed, place a bowl of ice in front of a fan. As the fan blows air over the ice, it will create a refreshing and cool breeze that can make your bedroom feel like an oasis. You can also try chilling your pillowcase or sheets in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime.
Hydration and Nutrition
Stay hydrated throughout the day to ensure your body is working as well as can be. Opt for light, easy-to-digest meals for dinner to prevent discomfort from digestion-related heat production.
Strategic Positioning
It sounds strange, but experiment with different sleeping positions! Sleeping with your arms and legs spread out allows heat to escape from your body more efficiently. You can also try elevating your feet slightly, which can improve blood circulation and help you feel cooler.
The Sheepskin Touch
As mentioned earlier, sheepskin rugs are not just for winter cosiness. Their thermoregulating properties make them suitable year-round. Lay a sheepskin rug under your sheets or use one as a throw on your bed. The natural insulation of sheepskin will help you stay comfortable, wicking away moisture and heat when necessary.
Cool Off Before Bed
Take a lukewarm shower or bath before bedtime. This can lower your body temperature and prepare you for a cooler night’s sleep.
Sleepwear Matters
Choose lightweight, breathable sleepwear made from natural materials like cotton or linen. Ditch the heavy pyjamas in favour of something more comfortable for summer nights.
Sleep Smart
Establish a consistent sleep schedule and stick to it. A regular sleep routine can help your body adjust to the heat more effectively.
