Sheepskin Isn’t Just For Winter!

You are here: Home Blog Sheepskin Isn’t Just For Winter!

Someone mentions sheepskin, and we know you’re picturing cosy nights in front of a crackling fire, mugs of hot chocolate, comfy warm slippers on autumn and winter nights. But what if we told you that sheepskin isn’t just for winter?

Did you know that sheepskin has an ability, one that we sometimes like to call magical, of not only keeping you warm in the winter (obviously, with all that fluffiness!), but also keeping you cool in the summer? Let us explain a little more:

The Science of Sheepskin

Sheepskin’s secret lies in its unique hollow fibres. These fibres trap air, creating a layer of insulation. In winter, this layer traps warm air next to your body, keeping you toasty. But in summer, the same air layer allows for breathability. As air circulates, it helps wick away moisture and sweat, preventing that sticky feeling and keeping you cool.

Unlike synthetic materials that trap moisture, sheepskin is also naturally absorbent. It can hold up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp. This absorption pulls sweat away from your skin, allowing it to evaporate quickly, keeping you dry and comfortable.

How can I use sheepskin in the summer?

We love to use our normal sheepskin soft furnishings, such as sheepskin rugs and sheepskin cushions, in a slightly more unusual setting in the summer. Planning a garden party or barbecue? Soften up your outdoor furniture with a little sheepskin love! Not only do they give the perfect luxury summer vibe (think Love Island!), but they’re also absolutely necessary when the cooler evenings start drawing in. We use them outside when the weather’s dry, but make sure to let them air out if they’re out too late into the evening or night! They’re also fabulous in a summer house or conservatory to bring the feeling of the natural outside world inside.

Summer heat can be especially uncomfortable for babies who struggle to regulate their body temperature. We have a lovely selection of sheepskin pram liners, car seat liners, and play rugs – ideal for keeping your little one cool and comfortable during the warmer months. We love throwing one of our rugs onto the grass in the shade so your baby has a safe, comfortable and familiar space to explore the outdoors. The breathable properties of sheepskin, along with its ability to wick away moisture, create a comfortable environment for your baby. This might even convince them that tummy time is a good thing!

The same goes for your pets, who may struggle in the summer sun. If you frequently find them panting in their usual beds during the summer months, it may be that the synthetic material is not helping them to keep their body temperatures at the right level. Fortunately for you and them, we have a collection of beautiful pet beds that are made of 100% sheepskin. And we think they look a lot lovelier than the standard pet bed too!

Can I wear my sheepskin slippers in the summer?

Absolutely, we insist that you do wear your sheepskin slippers in summer! Your feet deserve the comfort of sheepskin too! Thanks to the natural breathability of the sheepskin interior and exterior, you won’t feel uncomfortably warm in our sheepskin slippers. And if you like the feeling of the summer air on your toes? We have open toe slider styles that are bound to suit you!
